So, I would uninstall Chrome and Firefox and try using Safari for a while. I would say however that after many, many, many, many months of looking at EtreCheck reports from people complaining of slowness/sluggishness/lagging, if the culprit wasn't either an anti-virus program or an "maintenance" program, it was Chrome using up a ton of memory. I've never used Google Chrome because I don't care for their business practices re: user privacy, so I can't speak to its performance on my system.

So, I started using Safari, finding it ran faster, smoother, and didn't use up anywhere near as much RAM, even when watching videos on YouTube. I can't afford to upgrade the RAM in my computer, so I'm only working with 2 GB I plan on upgrading when I have the money, but when you have almost literally no money to your name, that becomes a frivolous expenditure. However, Firefox would eat through my RAM like no one's business. I loved it, enjoying the customizations you could do with it that you can't do with Safari. I have to agree with Jimmy on this - I used to use Firefox exclusively, both when I used a PC and then when I got my MacBook. With one tab open, firefox goes up to 600mb of memory eating. But when i close them it's almost the same. I am using web developer bar, and firebug on Firefox. Please see attached images if this is normal for the browsers.
